FPI(Friends Provident International)
We have received a number or queries/complaints from clients regarding transaction charges that are levied on their credit card, these are in addition to our standard charges and have not been claimed or processed by FPI. A recent investigation has been carried out and we now understand that these additional charges are levied by the bank and are Foreign Transaction fees (typically about 2-3% of the overall transaction amount). Please see the link below for more information.

This article indicates that a charge will be applied when a currency conversion is effected, it is also applied for cross-border transactions so is particularly prevalent for USD transactions where the card holders account is in USA and our bank is in the UK.
Another useful link (a more generic one, although the source of information isn't as reliable as the one above) that has been found is http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/foreign-transaction-conversion-fees-1276.php.
Unfortunately the additional charge is levied with the same description that we would use for premium collection thus the customers think that we have charged them more than they would have expected - this is not the case. Please ask any client who contacts us regarding such charges to refer to their card issuers Terms and Conditions or contact their card issuer for clarification.
many thanks
